Matt Stack of Mountainville Engine Co. #3 arrives on the scene around noon.

The smoke was puffing white to grey to black.

The first flames were spotted coming from the basement window to the right of the van.

The smoke was so thick sometimes that it obscured the house.

The flames subside, and volunter firefighters are sent up the ladder.

But the fire returns, with flames leaping out of the side windows, and firefighters are forced to retreat.

Firemen move the ladder away from the flames.
